Access to clean, safe water and sanitation is a worldwide need. Worldwide, 884 million people lack access to basic services for clean water, and 2.6 billion lack access to adequate sanitation, with devastating consequences for human health. Waterborne disease is now the second biggest killer of children under the age of 5. At home in the U.S., emerging contaminants pass untreated through standard drinking water plants threatening the health of millions of Americans. The JHU Water Institute actively promotes research to meet this worldwide need for clean water to protect human health.
